Portfolios > Ephemera and Drawings

My recent drawings investigate what has evolved and resonated with me throughout the pandemic. An ability to recognize the impermanence and fragility of my daily existence has transformed the way I navigate my practice: things aren’t always what they seem or appear to be, and one cannot foresee what is going to happen next. In short, all is always in a state of flux. Yet by envisioning the self and the workspace as interactive creative laboratories, I can examine how such a two-fold concept/procedure can be integrated with daily encounters—whether involving the use of found objects, sources from the news, or references from journals, art history and literature. Amidst experimentation with different paper surfaces, these points of reference serve as my “tabula rasa” for ideas and images to arise. Information can accumulate and unfurl, as I reach into untapped resources that can emerge from engaging life’s quirks and misdirections. This work relies on randomness and chance; most importantly, the coincidence and surprise of the process allows for elements of freedom and play to unfold without being bound to a predetermined outcome. As has been the case in the past and in my more recent work, producing a series of prints from one source has resulted in generating multiple intriguing results. And the abstract nature of what is being made enables my approaches and subsequent discoveries to manifest limitless possibilities as images take shape and are built upon.
